I am a life long lover of American history, especially civil war history.Gettysburg is only an hour drive from my family home in Maryland and I have visited the National Military Park scores of times.The battlefield has a special significance for our family because our ancestors, each fighting for their respective commands, were fated to be drawn into the largest battle in North America. One of our ancestors fought for the Union and was mortally wounded July 2, 1863 repulsing Pickett’s Charge. His name, James L. Miles is inscribed on the huge Pennsylvania Monument. Several of our ancestors fought for the Independence of the Southern Confederacy and survived the fierce fighting at Gettysburg and went on to survive the war and rebuild the South.I bought this book because I hoped it might add to my knowledge of the battlefield. But I think it was mistakenly listed under history and that did a disservice to its authors. It should be listed under “enjoyable short trips” or something similar. If you have an interest in taking trips to National Parks and you enjoy caricatures of important people from the mid-19th century, I think this world be a fun read. The authors created this with a light heart and it should be enjoyed by the reader. What an enjoyable book! Enough new information to keep Gettysburg aficionados interested, and a well-devised journey through highways and byways to enlighten the reader less familiar with the subject. The clever interweaving of the portrait drawings give faces to the always succinct but charming biographical details. Here's hoping Messrs. Coleman and Hartman turn their skills to more discoursing on this subject.
